tearing off the walls
no more Pudu Jail after today.
no more Pudu Jail as KL landscape or icon.
no more haunted stories.
no more artistic wall painting.
no more traffic congestion (for that's the ultimate purpose, if not served, arrrggghhh!)
a century passed... what has passed, passed, let passed.
seems like we are still behind the trend of historical architecture heritage work, a lot behind.

agree..thats the landmark of KL... i would do anything to conserve it.
SOmetimes I don't understand. We complained so much about heritage conservation but yet we do nothing about it. We complained whenever government demolished 'old buildings' and yet we do nothning about places that we visit frequently that is also old and unique.
Have anyone care about bus stops? We vandalized it but has anyone remember how bus stops of yesteryears looks like?
Anyone remember 'Bok House' ? It is one of the most beautiful private mansion in Malaysia. Not much of a public outcry when it was demolished.
Has anyone helped to preserve Tengku Kudin Mansion in Penang? If we public are really concern about heritage conservation, we can start with this mansion which in a bad state.
I applaud the people behind CHeong Fat Tze mansion in Pg, who rather than cry in protest, they actually did something about it.
Wht we need to do right now is not to cry fault, we have to do more than complaint. Maybe we can start by 'loving' our neighborhod. Ask, what was there before our place was there? Was it really worth keeping it?
Out of the sudden when the governemnt decided to demolished it, suddenly everybody cry foul. When it was open to public to visit no one really cared to go there. And some will stupidly asked "When it was open for public?" My answer would be "It was open to public when you were stupidly ignorant paying any attention to the building or busy with other wordly activities."
Blame ourself for being ignorant and hipocrit whenever a heritage building being demolish.

totally agree to u.
but, i still think that those professionals who are working towards preserving heritage buildings r not contributing enough effort. like Bok House case u mentioned.
as for my case towards Pudu Jail, thats because i grew up seeing it everyday, an extra feeling i have towards it. thats y i feel sad for the demolition.
there r ppl out there who fully support this demolition where i think its perfectly fine because everyone has a different perspective.
n to those who r totally ignorant, mayb v shd simply ignore their comments too.

Is not enough, is just not enough. I thought this is interesting to share. In Germany, most of the places were completely destroyed after WW2, instead of building new buildings(well, they did built post war 'boxes' i call them to accommodate the people quickly after the war)but they actually built the old town square exactly like before, very into details.
I think we cant compare with how things are in GErmany. The urbanization is different there. N it is costly. Those destroyed during the war r buildings. We can re-build and utilise it to the full effect. Should we destroy the old prison n spend hundred millions to re-build the prison for convicts? Wht we're talking about is a prison. in teh middle of KL. I dont think we can find a prison in the middle of Manhattan. So please dont apply the same concept of rebuilding on to this Pudu Jail dilemma.
I for once dont agree with demolition of old buildings but we have to consider and weigh the pros n cons.
Even singapore has to tear down teh old chnagi prison. Its simply not efficient anymore after weighing the pros n cons.
WHat we can do today is to fight for the restoration of the boat people camp in Pulau Bidong. That is soemthing worth preserving. It has social, humanity and historical value for us to remember. Infact there are many famous boat people who remembers Pulau Bidong. WHat say you? Up to it? A documentary maybe?
"n to those who r totally ignorant, mayb v shd simply ignore their comments too."
I think we shouldn't ignore the comments from the ignorant. They're not wrong, but simply not correct.
We must do something to correct their ignorence by explaining our perspective. It's a hard battle but at least I tried to give my perspective without being too sentimental but giving a more practical POV.
When we love soemthing, we need to learn to let it go. Maybe its best for everyone.
ah ha, i can see you got it the wrong way. I'm simply saying-people are trying so hard to preserved what's left of them, even under the so unusual circumstances(the war), they rebuilt to the exact because they want to tell future generations where they come from, this is their identity. No one is trying to apply anything here, this is simply sharing, and you simply got it wrong.
Yes i might get it wrong but one thing I believe is tht Pudu Jail is not worth keeping nor remembering. The key word here is 'worth'. The building is not our identity neither our culture unlike other heritage building elsewhere. Its only an old building with some sentimental value to some. So, we hv to weigh the pros n cons whether it's worth keeping. We shouldnt look into the asthetic value alone but also social, economic (of course they look more into tht), political, to some extent urbanization, health etc. Maybe tht place is owrth more as a public park which I dont think it'll happen. BUt keeping the huge site and probably turning it into a tourist attraction. It's simply not worth it.
Places like Bangunan Sultan Abd Samad, Sun Yat Sen's base in Pg are places i deemed worth keeping. They hv bigger historical ego than their physical size.
Rebuilding Nuremberg what more keeping it, is necessary as its part of social and cultural values and has more value to it than mere buildings. I'd love to visit Nuremberg n Dresden one day.
BUt for me, Pudu Jail is not worth keeping. Keeping the facade and front entrance is good enough for rememberance.
